    This Act "may" be called the Companies Act, 1956
    my query is, how we should intemperate it. as the word may suggests that provision of law must be read in liberal sence.
    thus can we call it by any other name as the word is MAY not SHALL
    thanks.

    The Act may be called is defined - as it can be changed due to the need of time as previously it was INDIAN COMPANIES ACT 1882 - and then amendment came and the government issued notification in that regarded and the name changed to COMPANIES ACT 1956 vide notification no. {1st April, 1956.See Gazette of India, Extraordinary,
    1956, Part II, Section 3, p.413.} - and when the word SHALL will come then there will be no question of amendment - and hence the word MAY is being used - Azam (Admin)

    Hari Krishan what i personally feel, the word MAY must be read as SHALL because whenever law imposes some duty & the word MAY is used in the law it means the lawmaker does not want to show hardship to do it.
